This lot is comprised of an original pen and ink drawing, Le Coq, on the unbound title page of the book Eaux-fortes originales pour les textes de Buffon (Histoire Naturelle) by Pablo Picasso with text by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, containing thirty-one etchings by Picasso. The drawing was done in dedication to his friend Jean-Louis Barrault. Signed, dated and inscribed to title page ‘Pour Jean-Louis Barrault Picasso Paris 30 Decembre 1942’. Printed number to justification page 'Exemplaire no. 172'.
Eaux-fortes originales pour les textes de Buffon (Histoire Naturelle) is number 172 from the edition of 226 printed by R. Lacourière, Paris and published by M. Fabiani, Paris. This complete book contains thirty-one etchings, loose as issued, text in French by Georges-Louis Leclerc, comte de Buffon, justification and title page with original drawing and inscription by Pablo Picasso, contained in original paper wrappers and folio, housed within original slipcase.
